Crooked Little Village

Saturday we went to the little crooked village of Lavenham. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you will see it in the next film. It is a really cool little place. It is hard to describe how crooked all the buildings are, and it is hard to capture them in photos. This is the best picture we have:
The kids had a blast that day. Not because of the village, but because we actually had some friends to meet there! Chris and Emmett are part of a playgroup and one of the other stay at home dads met us there with his family. They are a very nice bunch. Augi and Ava are just a few weeks apart in age and they became fast friends.

Em and Finn are about 6 months apart, and at this age that difference is still a lot. I was impressed with how pleasant Finn was despite missing a nap. They are dressed up in period clothing in this shot. Not a great shot of either of them, I just wanted to prove that they were really there.
I have been meaning to take some photos of all of the fun signs I see around England. I might make it a project later, but for now I am just pleased to get this sign:

It is fuzzy, we were going too fast (haha). I just think it is so dramatic. We'll slow down, geez!

Emmett is talking up a storm. He spent all day today pretend-playing. It is fun to watch him grow, but it makes me sad too. He walks up to me yesterday and says, "Hi witch. I Emmett. I knight. What doing witch?" I was supposed to be the scary witch who catches the knight--just in case you couldn't interpret that. Another week starts tomorrow. Another adventure.

First Day of School and Other Things.

It's official. She is big. I can't believe she started school this week. Full time. They don't mess around here. In our town, children begin full time school the term in which they turn 5. So, this Tuesday we walked my little girl to school. She was still little up until yesterday.  She was really excited. She laid her clothes out the night before, socks and all. She took her lunch. Anyway, the first day went ok. Just ok. She was itching with excitement all the way to school. We walked through the cemetary and down the road to her "primary school." We were early, so we sat on the bench outside her class. Each room has it's own little fenced garden area. She slowly got more nervous. She told me she was getting nervous because she is "from the United States." Interesting side note--the night before school she had nightmares about spiders. Guess what spiders in dreams symbolize? Feeling like an outsider. Perfect.
Anyway, we went into the class when the teacher called the children in. Moms and dads and kids were buzzing all over. We hung up her backpack, put away her water bottle and found the spot for the lunch box. She found a puzzle to work on. I said goodbye, then Daddy and Em said goodbye. Easy-shmeazy.
Then, I looked back at her. Her little lip was quivering and her eyes were filling with tears. OMG. My heart sank. I wanted to grab her and run fast. We can wait until the fall, right? How can they expect a 4 year old to go to a foreign school all day long? Well, I gave her a hug and told her I love her. She nodded. We left. I thought about her all day long. She didn't say a whole lot about her day, other than it wasn't really great. She picked out her outfit for today anyway and practiced reading and writing.
Then day 2 came. Today was a whole different story. Chris dropped her off and he reported that she went in calmly and cooly. Like it was an old hat. She was chatty and happy tonight. She has a friend, and the boys were chasing her. Already! OMG. She likes school. She asked daddy if she looks like a big kid on the way to school. Whew. Daddy and I are finally able to take deep breaths. We are all going to be ok. As for Em--well, he misses his Sissy. But, it is a great opportunity to sneak into her room and play with her stuff.
There should always be time to stop and look at a little worm. We threw him back in the mud to be sure he didn't shrivel.
Waiting outside...
Lots of other things have been happening. Mostly, I have had a cold. So, I don't feel like blogging. Just like sleeping. These are just some random pics of our lives over the last few weeks...
Augi called this her "tombstone." Maybe she is warped, but we do live across the road from a cemetary.
Augi and I went to see a theatre production of the Little Mermaid. Not the happy-ending Disney version. The Hans Christian Anderson macabre version. No cute little flounders or talking crabs in this production. More like witch narrators, bleeding legs, never getting to marry the prince and committing suicide in the end. Augi liked being there, but I think she was hoping for the magical Disney version. It's good to expand her horizons, right? We can't all have happy endings.
Augi has been working on some paper art. Her version of origami. She made me a purse (not pictured) and a finger puppet.
Dress up is fun!
We made some colorful bird feeders this weekend.
Augi and Em love having their Nanny back with them. Sadly, Em lost this hat recently. It was my favorite.
We received 4 large boxes today, despite the giant ash cloud preventing any airmail from reaching us in the UK. Good ole boats! We only have 3 boxes of books left to arrive and one box of miscellaneous crap. As we go through most of it, we are asking ourselves why we chose to keep it!
We have gone to another beach recently, and I have more pics to post. But, I need to get to bed for now.
I don't want to forget to send some good vibes across the ocean to Grandma Valerie. She starts chemotherapy today. We are thinking of you Grandma V!

A little update...

Yesterday, Em said for the first time, "Mama, I wuv ooo"
It melted my heart.
Augi said, "Mom, I know it is a good day when I get to spend the whole day with you."
A little more melting!
Nanny is eating for the first time tonight. Before I picked her up at the airport I sort of had this vision in my mind of that little puppy who used to spaz out when we had been separated for a while. Instead, she was skinny and wooly and she is deaf and can't see well. So, she just shivered and looked at me like, "What the hell just happened to me?" I felt really sad as I realized how old she is and how short the time we have left with her will be. Today she wagged her tail when I got home from work. She went on a walk and she is acting more like herself. I don't regret bringing her here. She really is my first baby.

She's Here!!!

Nanny Goat Gruff...my first child...finally arrived today! The quarantine process for the UK is horrific, and expensive. But, thanks to Papa, we were able to pick her up at the airport late this morning. She is tired but otherwise it is as if we were never apart! She didn't poo or pee for the entire flight--from Salt Lake to Houston to London. Nor did she eat. Silly girl.
She was pretty disoriented when we got her, but after a while she started to wag her tail. She was most excited to get to the house and she sniffed everywhere before she found her bed and crashed. I wonder if dogs get jet lag. Hmm.

Easter with a Twist

So, we had a great Easter weekend.
What better way to celebrate spring than surrounding ourselves with CHOCOLATE!?
We took a day trip to Cadbury World and then the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. It was a 2 1/2 hour bus ride, but it was worth it. Although, I have eaten so much chocolate today that I am sure I will not want any more for a LOOOOONG time. At least until tomorrow.
The British are wonderful at always ensuring a good playground is available at any attraction. In fact, sometimes the playgrounds are our favorite part!

This little shop in Burmingham made us think of one of our favorite kids...The Munch (Dayton!)

The first part of the tour includes a wax museum of the Aztecs--where the cocoa beans first originated.

There was an activity area for the kids to run around and stomp on splats of chocolate...

More of the playground...

I had so much chocolate it was coming out of my eyes. Ew.
Em is such a daredevil. He was only interested in the play equipment if it was labeled for above 6 years old.
After we filled up on Chocolate, we went to the Sea Life Centre. It was very cool!
This is a little backwards, but I can't figure out how to get my pics back up to the top. Grrrr. Anyway, Augi and I had to paint easter eggs because we couldn't find any dyes in the British stores.
Then, we decided to have the Easter Bunny come a day early because of our Sunday plans.
It was no problem for her.
